What is Chondrosarcoma?

Chondrosarcoma is a rare type of bone cancer that develops in cartilage-producing cells and most commonly affects the pelvis, hips, shoulders, ribs, and long bones. It is generally a slow-growing malignancy, although some subtypes can be more aggressive and spread to other parts of the body, particularly the lungs. Chondrosarcoma is more frequently diagnosed in adults and older individuals and can cause symptoms such as persistent bone pain, swelling, or a noticeable mass. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans, along with a biopsy to confirm the presence and grade of the tumor. Treatment depends on the tumor's location, size, subtype, and grade, with surgery being the primary treatment approach, while radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies may be considered in selected cases.

Stuti Mahajan, consulting manager at DelveInsight, stated that chondrosarcoma represents a rare, high-unmet-need oncology market with historically limited systemic treatment options, making it relatively underpenetrated but potentially attractive for differentiated targeted therapies. The emerging pipeline is increasingly focused on molecularly targeted and novel mechanisms, particularly IDH1 inhibition and DR5 agonism, which could diversify treatment options and gradually reshape the market, although commercial potential will remain constrained by disease rarity.

Recent Developments in Chondrosarcoma Treatment Space

  • In June 2026, Inhibrx Biosciences, Inc. announced that the FDA has accepted for filing its Biologics License Application (BLA) seeking approval of ozekibart (INBRX-109) for the treatment of patients with unresectable or metastatic conventional chondrosarcoma. The FDA has not identified any filing review issues at this time and has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) goal date of April 14, 2027.
  • In January 2025, Servier announced updates to two of its Phase III programs evaluating TIBSOVO (ivosidenib tablets) in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1)-mutated cancers. The first patient has been enrolled in the CHONQUER study, a pivotal Phase III clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of TIBSOVO versus placebo in patients with IDH1-mutated conventional chondrosarcoma.
  • In October 2025, Inhibrx Biosciences, Inc. announced positive topline results from the registrational ChonDRAgon study (n= 206) investigating ozekibart (INBRX-109) as a single agent versus placebo in patients with advanced or metastatic, unresectable chondrosarcoma.
